In the natural stone industry, the term custom-made is often associated with exclusivity or premium quality. In reality, the choice between a standard slab and a custom-fabricated one should first and foremost respond to a technical and design requirement.

There are projects where a standard slab is the most rational choice. Others inevitably require custom fabrication because only a tailor-made approach can achieve the intended result. When a standard slab is the most efficient solution
Not every project requires bespoke production. In many modular applications, such as repetitive flooring layouts, small wall claddings or projects where vein continuity is not a priority, starting from a carefully selected stock slab allows costs and lead times to be reduced without compromising the final quality.
Future replaceability is another important consideration. Using standard formats can simplify future maintenance or partial replacement, particularly in high-traffic environments or buildings that are expected to evolve over time.
A well-curated stock therefore remains a valuable resource, provided the material is selected with care rather than chosen simply because it is immediately available or competitively priced.
When custom fabrication becomes a design necessity
There are situations, however, where adapting a standard slab introduces compromises that can undermine the project.
This is the case with seamless surfaces, large wall claddings, complex kitchen countertops, bespoke staircases, bookmatched feature walls or ventilated façades. In these applications, the value of custom fabrication lies not in the machining itself, but in the ability to control every detail before production begins.
Very narrow joints provide a good example. A slab may fully comply with standard manufacturing tolerances and still be unsuitable for a project requiring perfect alignment and visual continuity. In these cases, tighter tolerances must be defined during the design phase, preventing issues from emerging only during installation.
A custom slab begins long before cutting
One of the most common misconceptions is that custom fabrication simply means cutting a slab to specific dimensions.
In reality, cutting is only one of the final stages of a much more comprehensive process. Before fabrication begins, final measurements, slab orientation, vein direction, batch characteristics and installation methods are carefully defined. This is followed by slab scanning, CAD/CAM nesting, production planning and quality control throughout the entire manufacturing sequence.
Only after these stages does the material actually enter production.
This approach significantly reduces unforeseen issues and allows potential problems to be identified while they can still be corrected efficiently, rather than after installation has begun.
The project also determines the material
Another frequently overlooked aspect is the relationship between geometry and the mechanical characteristics of the stone.
The research shows that materials with a similar appearance can have significantly different flexural strength values, making it risky to automatically transfer thicknesses or construction details from one marble to another.
For this reason, in technically demanding projects, material selection should progress alongside the definition of the geometry, taking into account the specific technical characteristics of both the material and its intended application.
The same principle applies to openings, cut-outs, cantilevered elements, self-supporting stair treads and large cladding panels. Every machining operation changes the structural behaviour of the slab and requires technical evaluation well before production begins.
The most expensive mistakes happen before production
In everyday practice, the most costly issues rarely result from poor fabrication quality.
More often, they stem from decisions made during the early design stages: incomplete site surveys, failure to verify site access, underestimating the weight of finished pieces, inadequate planning of vein continuity, out-of-tolerance substrates or late design changes introduced after production has already started.
The real value of custom fabrication is predictability
The decision between a standard slab and a custom-made one should never be based solely on the initial purchase cost.
For many applications, a standard slab is the most efficient solution. In others, the additional investment in design and engineering is offset by fewer joints, greater visual continuity, more controlled installation and a substantial reduction in execution risks throughout the project.
